fat/muscle & protein/carbohydrate

Could somebody please provide a simple reply to clarify the following:

As someone new to the gym/working out, please could somebody explain in simple terms the difference between gaining muscle and losing fat and the different ways that these two can be achieved, as I believe the two are considered as different goals.

Also, what is the role of protein and carbohydrates and are both equally required to lose fat and/or gain muscle?

Any clarification or advice, however obvious it might seem, would be much appreciated.

Cheers

    Hi Alex it can get a bit technical but to try and keep it simple;
    Weight training will build muscle and raise your metabolism which will help to burn fat. Cardio burns calories which will keep you fit and help you lose weight but the weight loss will be both fat and muscle. You need to combine both weight training and some cardio for best results together with a good diet. Weight training requires a diet to be higher in protien than a diet for a person who is a runner for example but to have a Healthy diet you still need it to keep it fairly balanced. Eat smaller meals five times per day and have protien with every meal.

    my simple reply to this would be that if your are looking to gain muscle you need to workout hard and intake a lot more calories than if losing fat. a lot of people see good results when they build up muscle first ignoring the need to see a six pack or lose flabby legs. then when they start doing fat burning exercises as well to compliment their muscle building they have a good base of muscle below the fat they are stripping off

    The other two replies both have good advice relating to muscle and fat but with regard to roles of proteins/carbs -and keeping it simple-you require proteins inc amino acids to help build,repair and sustain muscle and carbs(complex) to support your energy levels,a balance of these can be decided depending on your choice of workout and of course your work/life balance
