Q. I’ve heard that guggulsterones increase thyroid hormone levels. Is this true? Does this help weight loss?

A. The thyroid hormones control your metabolic rate. When your metabolic rate slows down, which it does when you go on a diet, you burn fewer calories each day. This means that the rate at which you lose weight also slows down [2].

Unlike some weight loss drugs, which boost thyroid hormone levels higher than normal, guggulsterones provide only natural stimulation of the thyroid gland. In other words, using guggulsterones will return your metabolic rate to where it should be.

The result? Losing fat becomes faster and easier, as your body naturally burns more calories each day. In one study carried in the journal Current Therapeutic Research, test subjects using a guggulsterone-based supplement lost 9.5 pounds of fat, compared to 3.1 pounds in those who just followed the diet and exercise programme [1].

If you want to try a guggulsterone-based supplement, look for one that contains Guggul extract standardised to at least 8% Guggulsterones. Some of the higher quality brands (such as Guggul Complex by Maximuscle) contain 10% Guggulsterones, plus you get a few extra goodies, including Gymnema Sylvestre and Forskolin thrown in for free.
